Let’s just call him Captain Art!

After taking 29 cruises, he’s got a lot to say:

The secret to solo cruising is making sure you’ve selected the right cruise line.

Nite Life Comparison:

Carnival, for instance, is the “party cruise line” and has the best selection of music at night. If you take a Holland America cruise you will have a piano bar, and an empty disco. On Carnival you will have both a disco top forty band, country western and a piano bar to choose from.  Single activities on Carnival are hosted.  NCL and Holland America leave you on your own.

Booking Cabins:

Most cruise lines charge 200% for traveling alone in a single room. NCL now offers solo travelers special rooms and prices. Carnival books the lowest category which is 150%...they most likely will upgrade you, which they have always done for me.

NEVER, but never share a cabin with someone you don’t know just to save a few bucks!  It will ruin your vacation.  Horror stories abound!   Imagine partying all night and having your new roomy getting up at 6 AM to exercise!  Also, if you meet someone, you just might enjoy having your own place to entertain them.

Dining:

Most cruise lines will attempt to sit you with other solo travelers, yet you will find yourself with three newly wed couples.  During dinner on the first night you should walk the dining room.  Each table has a number.  Find one or two tables you might prefer to sit at and ask the maitre’d with a twenty dollar bill to change your table.  Some cruise lines have open seating which means you can eat whenever you want with no assigned seating.  This works really well after you’ve met some oter travelers, but in the meantime, find yourself a table filled with singles.

When to Book a Cruise:

Whenever possible book within one month of sailing date.  This will give you the best price. Never, that’s right, NEVER when there is a holiday during the week or when school is out. You will be bombarded with little kids and young parents.

I have taken 29 cruises, mostly on Carnival which has become

my favorite.  My second choice is NCL which I refer to as a

Carnival wannabe.

If you want to be by yourself and just read, do not go on Carnival,

take a Holland America cruise, but if you enjoy interaction

and have fun with other singles, Carnival is the line to choose.

Best prices are during January, February and March.

Cabin for One
Washington Post writer Andrea Sachs recently wrote an article regarding Norwegian Cruise Line coming up with a practical package for singles: One used to be the loneliest number on a cruise ship. During mealtimes, One would be relegated to the misfits’ corner of the dining room or seated with families who aired their most intimate details between bites. On shore excursions, One was a outlier, a solitary snorkel in an ocean of multiples. In the top-deck pool, One swam alone. Worst of all, One was forced to pay for two, despite One’s singular status. But a few months ago, One’s fortunes substantially improved with the launch of Norwegian Cruise Line’s new ship Epic. Unprecedented in the cruising world, the 4,100-passenger boat carved out 128 studios with single-occupancy rates and created an exclusive lounge for soloists, eliminating the creepy factor of cozying up to unsuspecting strangers.
Solo travelers can now cruise and enjoy the experience without having to be punished for being single. The singles are being celebrated!
