Washington, D.C.
Plan ahead. Contact your Congressman
and your Senator’s office.
Let them know when you will be there and
ask for a personal tour. Sitting in on the

you’ll unlikely forget and it’s a perfect activity
for that solo traveler.

Richmond, VA
Heading into the South I found the roads, the homes,
and topography didn’t seem to change, but the
flavor distinct. From the Colonial era to the Civil War
and beyond, Richmond offers plenty of chances to experience history.
Here the Capitol Building of Virginia replicates the White House in D.C.,
but without the fences and the tourists. Even on a
Saturday afternoon, the downtown area of
Richmond is quiet. Other than a farmer’s market
near several blocks of eateries on old cobblestone
streets in the Shockoe area, not too much is
                                             happening on a Saturday afternoon.

Yet a visit to the Old Jefferson Hotel
will make your trip memorable.
Have a cocktail, cup of tea, or just kick back
and take in the history this famous
landmark has to offer. And take the time
to enjoy the walking tour at the hotel.

Graveyards! Islands! B&B’s
I traveled solo to New Zealand in June. Season’s end. Activities included trolling through graveyards, walking desolate islands, and begging the hosts of the bed and breakfast to please join their solo, and only, guest for breakfast!
An incredibly reflective experience in one of the world’s most beautiful countries. Catch my blog.

White House, Richmond VA...look the same only one’s guarded, one’s not!

The stretch of shops and boutiques on Rodeo Drive is only three blocks long.   It is here that the rich & famous do their shopping, and where tourists window-shop while trying to spot movie stars on the fabled street.  So many sidewalk cafes for the solo traveler to just kick back and get a load of some real action!

Cabin for One
Washington Post writer Andrea Sachs recently wrote an article regarding Norwegian Cruise Line coming up with a practical package for singles: One used to be the loneliest number on a cruise ship. During mealtimes, One would be relegated to the misfits’ corner of the dining room or seated with families who aired their most intimate details between bites. On shore excursions, One was a outlier, a solitary snorkel in an ocean of multiples. In the top-deck pool, One swam alone. Worst of all, One was forced to pay for two, despite One’s singular status. But a few months ago, One’s fortunes substantially improved with the launch of Norwegian Cruise Line’s new ship Epic. Unprecedented in the cruising world, the 4,100-passenger boat carved out 128 studios with single-occupancy rates and created an exclusive lounge for soloists, eliminating the creepy factor of cozying up to unsuspecting strangers.
Solo travelers can now cruise and enjoy the experience without having to be punished for being single. The singles are being celebrated!
